Is Non-Incisional Eyelid Surgery Right For You?
There are a number of options available for the almost half of all Asian people born without an upper eyelid crease. Some choose to use cosmetic solutions to create the type of eyelid they prefer, applying adhesives to the sensitive skin of their eyelids – sometimes several times a day. Others opt for a more permanent solution, and look to a plastic surgeon to have Asian double eyelid surgery performed.
Incision based procedures have been more common in the United States, while suture based methods have been more popular in Asia, but the development of new techniques has seen a rise in the popularity of non-incision double eyelid surgery in America.
Suture-based methods are not suitable for people with excessive skin or fatty tissue, or with loose skin around the eyelids. For people with thin eyelid skin and little to no fat, though, a suture-based procedure can have a number of benefits, including:
• less chance of scarring
• faster recovery time, and
• the ability to reverse the procedure
Because it doesn’t involve incisions in the skin of the eyelid, there is significantly less chance of scarring with suture-based eyelid surgery. This is not to say that non-incisional methods don’t carry any risk of scarring but, given how prone Asian skin can be to scarring, any reduction in the likelihood of scarring can be an important factor to consider.
Although both methods of creating an eyelid crease can result in swelling, discoloration and possible scarring, the amounts of these effects tend to be less with the suture method and, therefore, recovery is often effected more quickly. Each patient heals at their own rate, but most patients find they are able to return to work in a week or less when they’ve chosen a non-incisional surgery. Healing will continue, and results will continue to improve for up to a year, depending on the patient’s physiology.
Not everyone who chooses to undergo cosmetic surgery procedure is absolutely certain they are making the right choice, and not everyone is satisfied with their results once the procedure has been performed. The knowledge that, should they be unhappy with the results of their eyelid surgery, they can reverse the procedure and go back to the way they used to look can be very reassuring.
The flipside of this is, of course, that the results of non-incisional procedure tend not to be as permanent as those of incisional procedure. That means that if you are happy with your results, you may have to have the procedure redone, or touched up several years down the road.
