The Facts About Some Common Liposuction Misconceptions

Posted on Oct 11, 2013 at

Even though it is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States, there is some confusion in the public eye regarding the purpose of liposuction. Beverly Hills is undeniably the plastic surgery capital of North America, if not the World, and so it is somewhat surprising that, even here, many people share some of the more common misconceptions about how liposuction works, and what it is for.

Probably the most common misconception about liposuction, Beverly Hills based as well as in the rest of the country, is that it is a procedure designed for weight loss. Not only is this untrue, but attempting to use liposuction as a means of losing weight can be very dangerous to your health. Liposuction is a method of body contouring, and nothing more. With a tool like liposuction, Beverly Hills’ cadre of highly skilled plastic surgeons can help remove or reshape small, stubborn pockets of fat that you are unable to eliminate yourself through diet and exercise, but liposuction is by no means a substitute for diet and exercise.

There are also some strange ideas floating around regarding the differences between traditional tumescent liposuction and some of the newer techniques such as SmartLipo that add ultrasound or lasers to the procedure. These technologies are often referred to as a way of more effectively removing fat, or of helping to tighten the skin in the affected area. It is true that the heat from a laser can stimulate the production of collagen in the skin which can, in turn, improve the skin’s natural elasticity and ability to tighten up more quickly. A laser is not, however, a magic wand that somehow results in firm, tight skin that seems to be 20 years younger than it used to.

The major advantage to laser and ultrasound assisted liposuction is that it tends to be more effective and/or safer than traditional methods on certain difficult to treat areas of the body, including under the chin, and the lower back. For very small deposits of fat, laser and ultrasound can sometimes even be used without any incisions to liquefy the fat for the body to then eliminate through normal body processes. These new technologies have a very valuable place within the context of body contouring generally, and liposuction specifically, but they are certainly not a replacement for the traditional methods.
